We decided to enroll Makenna in a 2-morning a week preschool class at Blackhawk this year and today was her first day! This was all a last-minute decision for us. We just toured 2 weeks ago and turned in her forms last week, but I'm so glad everything worked out for her to go! She is SO excited about school. A few highlights...
1.) She needed a full-sized backpack (of course, with our last-minute decision, I missed all the really great sales - settled for a mediocre sale), which she picked out last Friday. It's pink with Monkeys & multi-colored hearts on it. She loves it and wears it all around the house. I think it makes her feel "big". :)
2.) She memorized her first Bible verse of the school year BEFORE school actually started. The word "school" is becoming a motivating factor for her to do lots of things. I love it.
3.) She went to bed an hour early last night in anticipation of an early morning with no complaints. By 7:05, she was in bed, clothes picked out, backpack packed, and sound asleep!
4.) She was too excited to eat breakfast. This was actually a problem. I'll post about that below with the school day summary...
Needless to say, she wasn't very cooperative for pictures, as she really just wanted everyone out the door and in the van on the way to school. Here are a few. I fully intend to pose some later. Don't make fun.
It was red day in her class. Everyone was to wear red today. (Had to borrow from my friend Jenny. Kenna picked this one from the bag and said "ooh, red and white stripes! I've never had that before!") Also gym day, which required tennis shoes, which ruled out wearing a skirt like she had planned on. Good thing she likes her tennis shoes. When they arrived, the hung up their backpacks in their own little spot and then found their seat at the table. Every child was to find the color-of-the-day crayon and color the picture at their seat. I posted two pictures of her coloring to note that she still switches hands. (Left, left, right as pictured below).
Her class has two teachers, Ms. Yvonne and Ms. Leah. This is Ms. Leah's arm. She was writing Makenna's name on her paper.
Mommy and Makenna. This is right before Brian and I left the room. She was very ready for us to be gone. She gave me a "See ya." I forced her to look up from coloring. :)
A few quick end-of-the-day stories.
She's apparently her mother's daughter in that she doesn't like to unpack the day right away. She shares when she feels like it, not when she's asked a bunch of questions. So when I asked her how school was as she exited the room, she said "I loved it, but I don't want to talk about it." After a few more failed attempts at drawing out answers, I just waited for her to say something. Here's what I heard/learned/gathered about the day.
-- "Mommy, they put this icky lemon stuff on the apple slices to keep them from changing colors. I didn't like it at all. Not at all. Never Never." (this was bad because if you recall she didn't eat breakfast... then no snack... so when I picked her up she was starving! We went to Pizza Hut.)
-- "I went potty all by myself. Someone tried to come in while I was going potty, but they weren't allowed to. They had to go to a different room to go potty."
-- "Mommy, M starts with Makenna. What does C start with?" (me: You mean, what starts with C? Courtney starts with C.) "Very good, mommy, that's right. Courtney starts with C. And Callie starts with C. And the other Calleigh starts with C. And Cameron starts with C, too!"
(I'm guessing they went over the first letter of everyone's name today.)
-- "Did you know that one of my friends in my class had a doughnut for breakfast today? Not a big doughnut, but a little one. Did you know that? Next time we go to school-time I'll show you who had a doughnut, OK mommy?"
And that's a wrap. Hopefully I'll learn more as the days progress!
