My daughter is sick. She's not hospital sick, or even vomiting sick. She's just got this pesky fever with no other symptoms. Viral, they tell me, and she got it from her little sister.
But every time Makenna gets sick I get nervous. When she was 9 months old she had her first really big fever, resulting in a febrile seizure. But not just a seizure. A lose consciousness, turn blue, stop breathing seizure. In fact, she continued to defy "normal" and had two seizures from that fever. I watched them run a slew of tests on my little baby, except the spinal tap, for which I had to leave the room because it was too much. I was relieved when they found the source, a bladder infection, but for the 72 hours it took for the medicine to kick in, and the fever to subside, I was a mess. It is a helpless feeling, as many of you know, to watch your baby hooked up to all kinds of tubes and monitors, with more questions than answers. From that point forward, every illness that results in a fever higher than 102 brings one seizure per illness. The seizures were never as severe as the first, and last year they were reduced to a short black out instead of a full-fledged seize.
But today, we are celebrating her first fever without a seizure of any kind. That's right, I'm rejoicing. It is never "fun" to watch your child be sick. But when I can let her rest without having Hawk Eyes on her waiting for her to choke or gag or fall over or go unconscious, it's a rejoicing kind of moment!
And then, the truth of my heart was revealed. She said "Mommy, is Jesus healing me?" I'm embarrassed that the words that came out of my mouth were "I sure hope so". What kind of faith is that? As I was mentally reeling those words back in, she said (with a big old smile on her face) "Well, I think He is. He heals people and He is healing me right now." Still kicking myself for my blunder, I said "You're right Makenna. He does heal people. And He can heal you." So we prayed for healing from the Great Physician and we await His healing touch with Child-like Faith.
