A New Twist on Birthdays

Hello again! As I was reading one of my favorite coupon sites (Hip2Save) I discovered a letter from another reader on a GREAT idea for birthdays. This goes along with what we are trying to encourage in our family, as it is, but I hadn't thought the process through yet.

The reader writes in regards to her kids' birthday parties, she does two things of note. 1) she stocks up on gifts after Christmas and then when her children get invited to parties, they pick a gift from the closet (or wherever she stores the gifts). no pre-party trips to the store, etc. and my personal favorite, 2) instead of having other children bring gifts for her little birthday kiddo, she has them bring something to help someone else... like peanut butter and/or jelly to donate to the local food bank, or diapers for a woman's shelter. (click here for the whole article)

Seriously. That's awesome. I love that it teaches selflessness at an early age, while still allowing the fun of special time with friends by having a party/get-together/outing/trip, etc.

What do you think about this type of birthday?

I've heard of these ideas before. They're great! My aunt did one themed around a movie that had come out. The girls either went to the movie or rented it (about pets) and the gifts they brought were for animals at the shelter. I thought it was really a fun idea.

Really good food for thought, Court. One thing that I've started doing lately is when the girls get new Christmas presents or Birthday presents, they count the number of new things that they received and have to give away the same number of existing toys. It hasn't always been easy, but I'm trying to stick with it. It's always good to be teaching less is more and the concept of sharing with others who may not have as much as we do.
